January 2025 Nature Connection Calendar
Author: Josée Bergeron

It’s officially 2025—a fresh start for everyone! The new year traditionally brings resolutions and lofty goals, but if you’re anything like me, those well-intended plans often slip away by February. I’ve especially struggled with the 1000 Hours Outside Challenge. Every January 1st, I’d print the tracker and color in a few spaces, only to forget about it altogether—and then feel guilty the rest of the year.

But while writing my book (coming spring 2026!) I discovered something that should encourage all families: it’s not about racking up endless hours; it’s about the moments you spend outside. Yes, more time in nature is great, but even brief, purposeful outings can have a huge impact on both your child’s well-being and your own.

That’s exactly why I created this January 2025 Nature Connection Calendar. Each of the 31 prompts offers a bite-sized way to connect with nature—no matter where you live, whether it’s an urban apartment, a suburban neighborhood, or a rural home. You can follow the prompts in order or randomly pick the ones that fit your schedule. Even if you only manage small, everyday adventures, remember: those moments add up to a healthier, happier family.

How to Use This January 2025 Nature-Connetion Calendar

Print & Post: Download and print the January 2025 Nature Connection Moments for Families calendar and hang it somewhere visible—like the fridge or a family bulletin board. Having it front and center makes it easy to remember daily prompts.

Pick Your Pace: Each day has a suggested nature-focused activity, but there’s no rule saying you must follow it in order. If you miss a day, that’s okay! Simply choose a prompt that fits your family’s schedule or the current weather.

Plan Ahead: Some activities (like “Make an Ice Lantern” on January 7) might require a little prep or supplies. Look ahead to see what’s coming, and gather any items you might need. This helps you avoid scrambling at the last minute. That being said, I’ve tried to include activity that will use items already on hand.

Stay Flexible: Not every suggestion will be ideal for your family’s situation or location—feel free to skip or swap prompts. For instance, if you’re in a warmer climate, you can modify “Find Snow to Play In” (January 19) by using sand, mud, or anything you have on hand.

Engage the Senses: Encourage children to notice sounds, textures, colors, and scents in nature. Whether you’re spotting a new bird (January 5) or listening to winter sounds (January 28), prompt them to describe what they experience.

Capture the Moments: Take photos or jot down quick notes in a nature journal (January 27) to celebrate your nature discoveries. Sharing highlights—like a beautiful piece of lichen (January 17) or a creative pine cone creature (January 24)—can inspire everyone to keep exploring. Feel free to tag #natureconnectedfamily

Celebrate Small Wins: Even if you only step outside for five minutes, it still counts! These micro-moments can spark curiosity and joy, building a lasting connection with the outdoors.

Combine activities: Combine calendar activities if it makes sense. For instance, if you’re already outside gathering natural objects for a winter mandala (January 10) search for winter insects (January 14). Feel free to make these activities your own!

Reflect & Reset: At the end of the month, think back on which activities brought you the most joy. Use these insights to shape your nature-connection habits in the coming months.

January Family Read: The Bears on Hemlock Mountain

This month’s family read aloud is perfect for cold wintery nights!

“Are there bears on Hemlock Mountain? One boy is about to find out in this classic tale. People have always told Jonathan that there are no bears on Hemlock Mountain, no bears at all. So he isn’t afraid to set out alone over the mountain. But as Jonathan discovers one cold winter night, people aren’t always right…There are bears on Hemlock Mountain!”
